Understanding
Acne

Acne is an inflammatory skin condition that develops when a combination of excess oil, dead skin cells, inflammation, bacteria, and abnormal shedding within the pore contribute to congestion and breakouts.

But what drives that process can be very different from person to person. Hormones, genetics, stress, lifestyle, skincare, medications, nutrition, and skin-barrier health may all influence how acne presents and behaves.

This is why I don't believe in simply drying out breakouts or treating what we see on the surface. Understanding the factors influencing your skin allows us to build a more personalized approach that supports clearer skin without unnecessarily compromising its health.

The Four Main Factors Behind Acne

Genetics + Hormones

Hormones and genetics can influence oil production, inflammation, and how easily pores become congested. While we can't change genetics, understanding these influences helps us build a plan that works with your skin rather than against it.

Inflammation

Acne is an inflammatory skin condition. Inflammation can begin before a breakout becomes visible, which is why calming and supporting the skin is just as important as treating what we see on the surface.

Skin Barrier Health

Healthy skin starts with a healthy barrier. Over-cleansing, harsh acne products, excessive exfoliation, or too many active ingredients can compromise the barrier, increasing sensitivity and inflammation and sometimes making breakouts more difficult to manage.

Congestion + Excess Oil

When oil, dead skin cells, and debris become trapped within the pore, congestion can develop. Depending on what's happening within the skin, this may appear as blackheads, closed comedones, inflammatory breakouts, or deeper lesions.

Genetics + Hormones → Inflammation → Skin Barrier Health → Congestion + Excess Oil

Start with a Skin Consultation

Looking for professional guidance without committing to a program?

A professional skin consultation is the best starting point for anyone new to At Skin Aesthetics or beginning their acne journey. Together, we'll assess your skin, discuss your concerns, identify potential root triggers, and educate you on the lifestyle, skincare, and internal factors that may be influencing your acne.

You'll leave with a personalized plan tailored to your skin, including professional skincare recommendations, treatment options, and guidance on the best next step—whether that's enrolling in my In-Clinic Acne Program, booking treatments as needed, or implementing a customized home-care routine.

In-Clinic Acne Program

Ready to commit to long-term results?

My In-Clinic Acne Program is designed for those looking for consistent guidance, accountability, and professional support throughout their clear-skin journey.

Together, we'll monitor your progress, adjust your skincare and treatment plan as your skin changes, and continue educating you throughout the process. It's designed for clients who want a dedicated partner and greater accountability rather than navigating their acne journey alone.

  • Regular progress assessments

  • Customized treatment and home-care adjustments

My easy-to-follow acne guides, educational programs, ingredient tools, and resources are designed to simplify skincare and give you the confidence to care for your skin—at your own pace.

Whether you're looking for a quick starting point with my 7-Day Reset Guide or a deeper dive into acne through my Acne Bootcamp, you'll gain practical, evidence-based education covering skincare, lifestyle, nutrition, and the potential root triggers that may be influencing your skin.

Professional Treatments for Acne

While skincare, education, lifestyle changes, and consistency are the foundations of clearing acne, incorporating professional in-clinic treatments can help support and accelerate the clearing process. If you choose to include treatments in your acne journey, your in-clinic protocol will evolve alongside your skin and its changing needs.

Treatment selection is based on your type of acne, level of inflammation, congestion, barrier health, and overall skin condition at the time—because what your skin needs at the beginning of your journey may look very different from what it needs as it progresses.

Customized Acne Facials
Targeted treatments to calm, hydrate, support the barrier, and address active breakouts or congestion.

Chemical Peels
Professional exfoliation used when appropriate to target congestion, breakouts, pigmentation, and texture.

HydraFacial
Customizable cleansing, exfoliation, extractions, and hydration to support congested or dehydrated acne-prone skin.

Microchanneling
Introduced when appropriate—typically once active inflammation is controlled—to address post-acne scarring, texture, and pigmentation.

My Top Skincare Picks for Acne

Skincare is one of the most important factors in achieving clearer skin—and can ultimately make or break your acne progress. The products you use every day have the ability to support your skin or work against it, which is why building the right home-care routine is always a priority. These are some of my go-to professional products for managing breakouts, congestion, inflammation, and barrier health while supporting long-term results.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to improve acne?

Every acne journey is different, and there is no guaranteed timeline. Your acne type, severity, contributing factors, skincare routine, lifestyle, consistency, and treatment plan can all influence progress. Acne improvement is typically a process rather than a quick fix, which is why consistency and ongoing adjustments are so important.

Can you help with hormonal acne?

Yes, from a skin-support and education perspective. While I don't diagnose or treat hormonal or medical conditions, I can help identify patterns, explore potential lifestyle and skincare contributors, and create a professional treatment and home-care plan to support your skin alongside any appropriate medical care.

Can diet and lifestyle affect acne?

They can for some people. Stress, sleep, nutrition, hormones, exercise, medications, supplements, and everyday habits may all influence the skin differently. My approach looks beyond the breakout itself to explore potential contributing factors while recognizing that acne is complex and rarely comes down to one single trigger.

Do I need professional skincare?

The products you use at home play a significant role in your results. While I'm happy to review your current routine, I can't guarantee acne improvement when relying on products outside of those I recommend, as many factors—including ingredients, formulations, pore-clogging potential, product combinations, and individual tolerance—can influence progress.

Using professional skincare that I've selected for your skin allows me to build and monitor a routine I understand, make informed adjustments, and give your skin the best opportunity for improvement.

Can I book treatments without joining the Acne Program?

Absolutely. The Acne Program is designed for clients who want greater accountability, ongoing communication, and consistent one-on-one support. If you prefer more flexibility, you can begin with a consultation and receive guidance on professional skincare and booking individual treatments as needed.

What if I don't live in Chilliwack?

You can still work with me. Virtual consultations and acne programs are available for clients outside of Chilliwack, across Canada, and internationally. The level of support can range from individual skincare and education appointments to more comprehensive ongoing virtual acne support.

When in Doubt, Start with a Consultation

You don't need to know which treatment, product, or program you need before reaching out. A professional consultation gives us the opportunity to understand your skin, discuss your concerns and goals, explore potential contributing factors, and determine the best path forward for you.
